On account of the new Tax Cuts and Jobs Acts, more religious institutes may have discovered they are now required to file a Form 990. A religious institute or other tax-exempt organization using the calendar-year as its tax year must file a Form 990-series return by May 15, unless it has filed Form 8868, an Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File an Exempt Organization Return. 

On May 6, the IRS suggested that such organizations consider three steps to help ensure a complete return and reduce the chances the IRS will send the return back or need to request additional information. On May 7, the IRS provided clarification regarding one of the three suggestions.
